When I cooped this with my brother, he used the stun rod for almost half the game, because it killed just about every normal enemy in one hit. Then with the big enemies (chainsaw dudes and such) we'd stun them with a headshot and he'd just run up to them and start slapping them over and over with the stun rod until they were dead. Also it works just like the stun grenades in that it instantly kills any plagas weaponhead or spider or whatever type enemy. It does surprisingly little stunning.
I went with the rifles because someone has to do the sniping. The shotgun is almost always an ideal anti zombie weapon of course.
well, if you are talking about when you have the infinite ammo thing off, I prefer a mixture of rifle, handgun, and shotgun. Now you may wonder why I do with ammo, but I don't need ammo for my rifle cause it's the S75 one and with max upgrades, it can hold 50 shots anyways, so I don't need to carry ammo for it. then I carry the hand gun and shotgun ammo, using the handgun for single enemies (shoot leg, punch, repeat), and when the enemy is too close, or gathered, shotgun away, then when far, snipe their heads open
The shotgun is effective and can mow down alot of things... But there's something about the automatic that makes me feel better...
With a shotgun you need to get in close for it to do anything good... But an Automatic? you can keep a good distance while still mowing down loads of enemies... the fact that it releases so many bullets in such a quick amount of time and creating such a kill count is really an art form in itself...

Any semblance of realism is lost when games take away basic human functions just to let you aim and shoot...
